the carlson accident. at least three cars were involved. allie rasmus is live with the details. >> reporter: east bound interstate 80 at the carlson is the freeway onramp behind us. all lanes have been reopened as of about a half hour ago, that was not the case early this morning, when shortly after 5:00, all lanes of traffic on eastbound 80 were blocked. this was after a three car, serious injury crash. the battalion chief telling us, some of the people who witnessed this accident, came out to try to help the injured passengers. >> people that were on the freeway had stopped and were driving some of the victims out onto the freeway. >> reporter: now, three people were seriously injured, critically injured, they were all transported to area hospitals. chp says a fourth person, the

driver, ran away. chp investigators still have not been able to find him, and talk to him about what happened. they don't know if he was responsible, but they are still looking for him. right now, they don't have a description of the driver to give us. chp is looking into how this crash happened, because they haven't been able to talk to all the people directly involved. they are either all in the hospital, or as you mentioned, that fourth person, they're still looking for. live in richmond, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. the highway patrol, and local law enforcement agencies are busy looking for drunk drivers. from 6:00 friday night, until 6:00 a.m. yesterday, 67 people in the bay area were arrested for dui, that's up from 5 during the same time last year. this is a maximum enforcement period through tomorrow night

officers will be keeping a close eye out for drunk drivers, distracted drivers and people who are not wearing seat belts. time now for your drive time traffic. you're looking at a live picture of highway 267. about 5 miles away in sunnyville, the chp did respond. a black suv reportedly crashed into a guardrail, trapping the passenger, no word an their condition this morning. let's move over to the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic moving very smoothly. the heat is on in the bay area for this 4th of july weekend. today, a spare the air alert is in effect. it's only the second time the air quality alert has been issued this year. but that alerts means there will be high levels of

first commercial flights. time now, 7:15, a brief scare at camp david this weekend. it happened yesterday, the defense officials say a plane entered the restricted zone above the presidential retreat. authorities tried to contact the plane, but the pilot didn't respond. the secret service later interviewed the pilot and determined it to be an accident. now later this week, president obama will hold his first tweet up, it's a town hall meeting in which the president will answer questions via twitter. it will happen wednesday afternoon at the white house east room. the white house is asking for questions from the public. the questions will be selected by jack dorsey, the man who founded twitter, five years ago. twitter now claims around 200 users. take a look. the gold trim seal likes like

a volcanic eruption in indonesia is causing people to

♪[ music ] new this morning, an early morning accident in richmond. welcome back to ktvu mornings on 2. >> that crash happened just after 5:30 this morning. >> allie rasmus is live at the scene now with some new information on the investigation. >> reporter: we just got an update from chp. they have confirmed that one of the drivers involved crashed from injuries. they are still trying to figure out exactly how this crash happened. what we do know at this point is where it happened. it happened around 5:00 this morning near the carlton on ramp on 80 in richmond.

three of the people are in the hospital, unable to speak with investigator. a fourth person is missing. all the lanes were traffic were blocked after this three car cash. the driver that has died is the driver of that car that caught on fire. richmond firefighters responded to the scene. witnesses also saw a forth person pull away, and chp investigators want to talk to that driver. >> we got one subject that fled on foot over the westbound lanes. >> he ran? >> ran away, i'm sorry. >> is this person believe today have caused this accident? >> again, we don't know. >> reporter: the passenger who was in the car with him is in the hospital. investigators are hoping once she is able to speak with them,

they'll be able to gather more information about this fourth driver. live in richmond, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. investigators think someone deliberately torched a fireworks stand in stockton. the stand was closed, so it did not have any fireworks inside. a nonprofit group operated that booth. witnesses report seeing some kids before it went up in flames. a man died after apparently drowning in the current river just east of bakersfield. deputies found the man floating face down near the keysville north camping area. they concluded that he had likely drowned. the coroners offings will determine the official cause of death, the man's name has not been released. thousands of homes in the

phoenix area are without power and electricity. meteorologists say afternoon clouds from that monsoon likely kept the area from reaching 120 degrees. a southern california man and his teenage son were rescued after being overcome by the triple digit heat on a hike in the arizona mountains. authorities received a call about ill hikers yesterday. allen pace and his 13-year-old son jacob had run out of water. they were treated on the scene for dehydration, but did not need to be hospitalize the. one person is dead after violent storms ripped through wisconsin. officials are searching through the debris, trying to see if anyone is trapped inside the rubble. they're also handing out, foot, water, and medical supplies to storm victims.

autopsies will be performed today on a father and daughter who died in the mountains. searchers found the bodies along a mountain trial yesterday. the two had vanished after going on a backpacking trip two weeks ago. authorities are considering the area a crime scene. some think the hikers slipped, and fell on the steep terrain. >> we have a late thaw, and we sat and watched a rockslide yesterday after a heavy rain. the fact is, it's high speed country. >> relatives hoped the experienced hikers would still be alive. the father wrote wilderness survival guides. doctors will return to sausalito to look for the plane that capsized. searchers think it could be days before they locate the aircraft. visibility under water is just 6 inches. the pilot says he was trying to

cruise the shore line, when waves were made from the nearby ferry and engulfed the plane. >> it should have nosed over, and its back, if that's the case, the plane mr. be -- will be where the tide struck the bottom. a fishes boat that ran aground in bodega bay this week has been successfully towed back into shore. a member sent out a lifeboat. the two fishermen were rescued and taken to shore and they were not hurt. a warning about a scam. someone is making phone calls requesting donations on behalf of brian carter, an officer who recently died from cancer. the association says it is not soliciting funds on behalf of the late officer. the poa also says it never

requests donations over the phone. carter was an 11 year veteran with the department. he died june 22 at the age of 37. the association is sponsoring a blood drive in carter's honor on july 8. the race for the san francisco sheriff could soon have a new candidate. the chronicle is reporting that san francisco police captain greg corrales is considering a run. current sheriff michael hennessey is retiring. san francisco police have arrested a suspect in a shooting of two men that happened last night on ellis and jones streets in the tenderloin. one of the victims is in critical condition. a 78-year-old bistander was also hit in the foot. police have recovered a gun, they say they believe was sewed in that -- used in that

shooting. a new memo has licensed bay area cannabis dealers concerned. it warns of the obama administration is not going to allow large scale cultivation of medical marijuana by departments. the memo is a departure from the original hands off approach to medical marijuana. >> i think the timing is with the presidential election coming up. >> i think this memo is to prevent people from profiting having these farms. it says state local ordinances are not a defense. >> the memo could expose nonsanked medical marijuana clinics to greater enforcement of federal raids. u.s. law enforcement says a drug cartel is targeting american tourists in the border

♪[ music ] good morning to you, what a gorgeous start to the day. calm conditions, and temperatures starting out in the upper 50s, low 60s. happening right now, the casey anthony murder trial is now underway in orlando. the 25-year-old did not testify in her own defense, and the jury is expected to be handed that case fairly soon. >> jessica stone is live in orlando for us. >> reporter: right now, we're already in a 15 minute break between the prosecution's closing arguments and the defense closing arguments. the prosecution wrapping up just a minute ago, after nearly two hours of closing arguments in which they laid out the case that casey anthony is a mother

trapped between the desire to party and shop, and the responsibilities of a mother, that she had a pattern of lying. he laid out the case that she suffocated her daughter with duct tape. that she put the body in the vehicle and borrowed a neighbor's shovel, we're getting ready to hear what the defense had to say. >> can you talk about what you expect the defense team to deliver to the jury, and how long do you think their arguments going to last? >> reporter: something very interesting that happened this morning before the jury was brought in to hear these arguments is that the judge allowed the defense to presentity case in closing arguments that caylee anthony had died as an accidental drowning in the swimming pool.

they're allowed to use photos of them swimming in that pool. previously, it was thought, because the attorneys were instructed not to use evidence that had not been directly introduced, we would not be able to hear this argument, now it appears they're going to be able to use this argument again. they will now be able to use that to close. one problem is that the judge decided to the no allow -- not to allow them to use another part of their argument, which is that george anthony, casey's father, abused her, resulting in her creating this lifestyle of lying. >> is the judge putting a time limit on how long those can go? >> reporter: i would expect so. if we see the defense going about as long as the prosecution. the prosecution went about an hour and 45 minutes.

we should see the case handed to the jury in the next few hours. they may have two or three hours tonight, then they will be back here tomorrow morning, they'll have an 8 hour day, in which they can deliberate, and hopefully, come to a conclusion here. >> jessica, thanks for that update. time now, 7:47. two ice cream truck drivers who caused suspicion after handing out free ice cream, and taking pictures of kids say they did nothing wrong. kids in deer born michigan investigated after kids reported a suspicious ice cream truck. >> kind of suspicious. you're not supposed to go around pelittle kids with candy to come over to their cars. >> a man and woman came forward

for live music and art. that festival continues today from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. alameda county is home to the world's largest hamburger. it weighed in at 777 pounds. that beat out the previous world record burger which was just 590 pounds. bite sized pieces were sold for 99 cents. that all benefited the county food bank. thousands of people raised their glasses to drink for a good cause. it was the 11th annual fest. it offers a number of assistance programs to women with cancer. the founder of the festival says she was moved to start the event when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago. >> everyone should be entighted to medication and treatments

that make you feel better. social services, acupuncture, everything. >> organizers say yesterday's festival raised about $30,000 for the clinic. time now 7:57. a mountain lion is suspected of attacking a deer in the east bay. skiing in shorts. people throughout the western united states are celebrating the 4th of july in a very unique way.

people probably cringing out there, we do have the heat advisory back with us for the noon time until 9:00. highs today, hitting the century mark, maybe even a little bit above. we'll show you where we do expect to be the hottest, and what you can expect outside your door this morning coming up. the search is on for a driver in a multivehicle cashed in richmond that left one person dead. allie rasmus is live with how bistanders tried to help. >> reporter: the chp is investigating this as a hit-and- run crash. although though don't know if this driver they're looking for caused the crash, they say they just want to talk to him and see how this accident happened in the first place. this is eastbound 80, just pass the carlson on ramp. traffic is moving very smoothly

here, but that was not the case a couple of hours ago. this three vehicle crash blocked three lanes. richmond firefighters were called to the scene. they say some of the people who saw the accident happen, tried to help, and pulled some of the injured out of their cars. >> people were dragging some of the victims onto the freeway. >> a lot of traffic on the freeway. people were just trying to get out. we've definitely seen an increase in traffic. people need to be careful. >> reporter: chp investigators don't know if alcohol was a factor in this crash. they tell me they'll have to await some lab tests from the hospital to determine that. rhp is still looking for that fourth person involved in the

crash. one of the drivers jumped across the median, and ran across westbound 80 to flee the scene of this accident. chp doesn't have a description of that driver to give us. but at the say they're still looking for that man. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. busy this holiday weekend looking for drunk drivers. 67 people in the bay area were arrested for dui, that's up from 57 during the same time last year. this is a maximum enforcement period. through tomorrow night, officers will be keeping a close eye out for drunk drivers, dries tract the drivers and people who are not wearing seat belts. a spare the air alert is in effect for the bay area today. it's only the second time an air quality alert has been issued this year. the alert means there will be high levels of pollutants in

good morning to you, bright sunny skies over bay point this morning, already sitting in the low to mid-60s. investigators believe a fire at a premier london hotel started in the basement. that forced 1500 workers and guests to evacuate, including black eyed peas front man, will i am. it spread throughout the 28 story building. fortunately, no one was hurt in that fire. authorities in state line, nevada are investigating the death of a woman when fell from a balcony. the 68-year-old of placerville fell from a 14th floor balcony at the horizon casino resort on

friday. her body was discovered by security guards. authorities are trying to figure out if the death was an accident or intentional. jurors could soon be deliberating. i want to show you a live look inside the courtroom in orlando. anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee, and dumping the body in the woods in 2008. defense attorneys argue the toddler accidently drowned in the family swimming pool. anthony has pleaded not guilty. if convicted, she could face the death penalty. stay with us, on ktvu mornings on 2 for more from this trial. people are trapped this two separate mining emergencies in southern china. a build up of volatile gas is hindering rescue attempts. u.s. officials say there is

anyone is trapped inside the rubble. they are haming out food, and water and medical supplies to storm victims. racing to prevent an environmental disaster. and oil pipeline burst under yellowstone river. cleanup crews are deploys booms to soak up that spill. thousands of homes in the phoenix area are without power, and air conditioning after record heat. a monsoon knocked out electricity, and the high temperature reached 118 degrees. that beat the city's 116-degree record for july 2, set ten years ago. afternoon clouds from that monsoon likely kept the area from reaching 120 degrees. a southern california man and his teenage son were rescued

after being overcome by the triple digit heat in a hike in the arizona mountains. authorities received a 911 call about ill hikers. allen pace and his 13-year-old son jacob had run out of water. rescue teams searched for nearly two hours until they actually found the pair. they were treated, and did not need to be hospitalized. time now is 8:24. rosemary is talking triple digits. drink a lot of water today and bring your sun block. >> absolutely. even when you don't feel thirsty, a good idea to stay hydrated, and a hat for the kids. look at all of that blue sky. we're warming up pretty fast, just a little fog up against the coastline near monterey. that should be burning off fairly quickly. heat advisory from noon until 9:00. spare the air day, it's going

you are taking a live look outside at san francisco this morning. some places in the bay area are expect today hit 100 degrees today. a hit-and-run crash on interstate 80 in richmond kills one person, and injuries two others. allie rasmus is live near the scene. we know officers are currently searching for one driver involved. what have you learned about that person? >> reporter: at that point, we don't know much about him. all chp could tell us, is that the car was driving, involved in this accident is registered to an address in daly city.

we don't know if that's the person who was behind the wheel when this happened. we can show you where it happened, right here behind us on eastbound 80. just before the carlson boulevard onramp. it happened just before 5:00 this morning. one person died. that person was driving a pontiac sedan, according to firefighters burst into flames shortly after impact. two other people were hospitalized with serious injuries. richmond firefighters were called to the scene. they said some of the people who witnessed the crash tried to help by pulling the injured out of their cars. a fourth person fled the scene. witnesses said he jumped over the median, and ran across westbound 80 to get away. >> we have the passenger from his vehicle. that's kind of our key witness at this time. >> reporter: for 40 minutes, traffic was tied up on interstate 80. all lanes were blocked. they don't know if alcohol was

a factor in this crash, and again, chp hasn't identified the driver who died yet. as you heard, the passenger of that vehicle is in the hospital. chp investigators haven't been able to talk to her, because she was seriously hurt in this accident. but they're hoping once they're able to talk to her, they can get more information about this driver they're still trying to find. live in richmond, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. drivers will look for the plane that capsized in richardson bay. searchers think it could be days before they locate that plane. the pilot tells ktvu, he was trying to cruise the shore line when waves from a nearby ferry engulfed his plane. >> it should have nose dove onto its back. if that's the case, the plane

is can go going to be exactly where it struck the bottom. >> because it is a privately owned plane, the pilot is going to have to pay for that recovery. a fishing boat that ran aground in bodega bay has been towed back to shore. it hit a channel marker in the harbor just before 11:30 thursday night. a member of the coast guard heard the crash and sent out a lifeboat. the two fishermen weren't hurt. one of the shootings happened around 7:45 last night at ellis and jones in the tenderloin. one of the victims is in critical condition. police have arrested a suspect and recovered a gun they say they believe was used in the shooting. just an hour earlier, a man was shot in front of a san

francisco mcdonald's. he was shot in the hip. the shooting was not report roughed until a taxi dropped -- reported until a taxi dropped off the victim at a nearby hospital. no one is in custody. the race for a san francisco sheriff could soon have a new candidate. san francisco police captain greg corrales may announce sometime this week. he believes he has a chance because one of the candidates doesn't have law enforcement experience. a memo from the department of justice has licensed bay area cannabis dealers concerned. it warns that the obama administration is not going to allow large scale cultivation of medical marijuana by local governments. the memo is a departure from president obama's original

a few hundred people participated in that parade, which is a small number compared compared the gay pride celebration in brazil. three southern california marines are facing charges of defrauding the government after entering into sham marriages. the scam began when a female american found a male marine to marry and collect a housing benefit. in addition to the charges, the marines may also have to pay back the military $75,000. ryan vogelsong will take the mound today as the giants try to sweep the detroit tigers to close out interleague play for the suspect. pablo sandoval got san francisco on the board yesterday with a two run shot off max scherzer. later in the evening, crawford hitting a through three run

good morning to you, a live look, san jose, mostly blue skies. relatively warm start to the day. 60s and 70s outside our doors this morning. a stockton charity says it doesn't understand why someone would deliberately burn down its fireworks stand. the stand was closed, so fortunately, it did not have fireworks inside. a nonprofit group operated that booth. witnesses saw kids running from it before it caught fire. no arrests have been made. a nuclear facility is no longer threatened by a wildfire, but now sacred sites

of indian tribes could be affected. the fire has been burning for eight days and has scorched close to 180 square miles. more than 1600 firefighters are working to get that fire under control. time now is 8:44. closing arguments began just over an hour ago in the casey anthony murder trial. that jury is expect today begin deliberating this evening. reporter jessica stone is live now in orlando for us. what's happening now? >> reporter: this is today, the jury's last day to hear competing theories of how 2- year-old caylee anthony died two years ago, and casey anthony on trial for killing her daughter. a 2-year-old caylee anthony playing lovingly with mom casey, now on trial for murder.

telling the jury, casey suffocated caylee with duct tape so she could party and shop. >> she had to choose between sacrificing two things. the first was her dreams and the life she wanted, and the second was her child. we submit to you, the evidence in this case shows that the choice she made was her child. >> reporter: his case is largely built around circumstantial evidence. a medical examiner never determined how caylee died. the defense team will get a chance to lay out their claim that casey anthony drowned in a swimming pool, a cautious last minute move by the judge. >> there is evidence that the defense can make a reasonable

inference of an accidental drowning by the use of the pictures. >> reporter: the defense now in the process of giving its closing arguments. they began about a half hour ago, saying there are more questions for the jury than answers number 1, because we still do not know how young caylee anthony died. once he's done, and he said he will take longer as in the hour and a half that the prosecution took this morning. there will then be a time for prosecution rebuttal before the jury gets the case. thanks so much. a florida amusement park is closed today after an employee died. justin honeycutt was working on the star fliers ride, while it was closed for repairs. the orlando fire department officials say he was 90 feet in
